Champions League 2019 and aluminium. New challenges in die casting LED sports lighting

Event: Champions League Final 2019. Saturday 1st June 9:00 PM

Place: Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, Madrid

The 2019 UEFA Champions League final will take place on Saturday 1st June at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. This environmentally friendly stadium, which uses recycled rainwater to irrigate the pitch and high-power LED lighting, amongst other features, was opened in 2017.

But what does this have to do with aluminium and Saeta?

Managing the technical lighting systems in this type of venue presents several remarkable technological challenges, being some of them successfully solved thanks to the contribution from Saeta. The new Atlético de Madrid stadium is the first in the world to be powered entirely by LED lighting technology with 20,257 luminaires and 336 floodlights for the pitch, all manufactured in Valladolid.

In order to meet this technological challenge, it is essential to respond confidently to the project technical specifications.

LED luminaires have replaced the old technology of discharge lamp luminaires, but new demands emerged that had to be met. Heat dissipation is an essential factor in LED luminaires and achieving this requires proficient understanding of the manufacturing technology used to create these luminaire covers so they can operate effectively for a long time. In the past, it was enough to manufacture a cover incorporating the electrical mechanisms enabling the discharge lamps to be switched on. Nowadays, the need for space has been replaced by the need for very specific and complex surfaces that allow appropriate dissipation of the heat generated by LEDs.

Likewise, the shapes and characteristics of new luminaires require more robust and fixing systems adapted to the new specifications.

The steel brackets used in the past have been replaced by specially designed injected aluminium mounting systems, subject to sophisticated quality control including X-ray inspection to guarantee the internal structure of the material.

As experts in injection diecasting for lighting device parts, Saeta has manufactured the luminaire component parts which will be used to illuminate the 2019 UEFA Champions League final. All our injection and quality control processes have been comprehensively tested to guarantee the safety of both the stadium fans and the luminaire itself.
